A few words about the Rella’s Summer Camps…
For the past nine years, we have been fortunate to watch the kids that attended the Rella’s Summer Camp make immense progress in their German in a very short amount of time. Here a little bit of background:
We meticulously prepare the summer program down to the smallest detail, so that we are able offer something for every age group, learner type and level of German language proficiency. If a child is stimulated on many levels, she will forget that she is in a German language program and is just having fun! Bi-lingual research shows that the more stimuli (ie: pictures, music, movement, tactile stimulation, story telling) are involved in bi-lingual teaching, the more language retention will predictably happen.
Learning happens so effortlessly when children enjoy what they do. It is our pride to provide this calm, stimulating and joyous environment where your child knows they will have fun and be accepted even if they don’t know anyone (yet).
“Abrakadabra!” - Week 1 (June 24th - 28th, 2024)
Didn’t you always want to be a “Zauberlehrling”? This week, the children will be deeply immersed in the world of magic: We will explore many magic recipes and tricks and will learn about the old magic Merlin. Many books from “Zilly” to “Die kleine schlaue Hexe” will give us a lot to discuss how to become a good “Zauberer(in)”. At the end of the week, we will experience a real magician at work.
Like always at Rella’s Summer Camp, after 15 minutes of free play at arrival we start the day in the circle and learn the basics: ABC, numbers, colors, shapes, new vocabulary, song and books related to the theme of the week. Then we head over to the arts and crafts area, where the work on our white books starts.
Now we’ll enjoy a hearty snack, followed by a second period of fun learning. Around 10:30/45am we’ll head to Central Park (1/2 block away) for lunch and water fun. The kids that are napping will return around 12:30pm. Kids that don’t nap stay in the park and return around 2:30pm.
After Care is from 3-5pm.
"Pippi Langstrumpf" - Week 2 (July 8th - 12th, 2024)
Pippi Langstrumpf is the quintessential independent child. She knows how to do so many things by herself and she is so strong that she can lift a horse! She knows how to bake “Pfefferkuchen” and creates her own Math logic. We will get to know Pippi and her friends Tommy and Annika well and learn the title song of the famous 1970 TV-series. The campers will feel like Pippi as they will all get a pair of Pippi socks. For our weekly excursion we will spend the morning in Central Park and see what Scavenger Hunt she prepared for us!

This is a wonderful way for children to apply themselves and create their own food! Food shopping at Whole Foods and a trip to the Farmers Market comes first. We get to know all the ingredients in German and then try to learn how to rinse, cut and cook in German! And at the end of the week, we will be surprised by a first-rate German-speaking chef.

By doing a New York City Firefighter workout every day we will feel how fit firefighters actually need to be in their job. And we will visit an actual Fire Station close by and conduct an interview that we will translate into German. That way the campers will learn interesting vocabulary like “Einsatzleitwagen” or “Brecheisen" And the choreography to “Wir sind als Allererste da” will be sent to the parents on video!
